Khia Hong (b.1994, Seoul) is a sculptor who lives and works in New York. Hong’s material-focused, labor-intensive sculptural practice is a defiance against the unstable, transient, alienating, and disintegrated nature of today’s society. With materials such as stone and plaster, she builds forms that highlight the physical properties, characteristics, and histories unique to each material. Her sculptural explorations involve in-depth research of the lineage of artists who have developed the potential of the materials’ language, with attention to the spatial, cultural, and social contexts in which they were utilized. Hong’s sculptures are produced through a dynamic studio process of carving, modeling, and chiseling, with improvisational gestures of coloring and drawing. Since Hong’s first solo exhibition <Vanilla>(Project Space Yeongdeungpo, 2021), she rose to prominence in the Seoul art scene by raising hard-hitting questions on the agenda of contemporary sculpture and bringing together sculptors across generations for a more close-knit community. Her work has been exhibited at Rainbowcube Gallery, WESS, Perigee Gallery, Art Space Boan, among others. Her independent publications, Vanilla(2021) and Vanilla II(2023), are compendiums of not only her works, artist notes, and reviews but also dialogues between contemporary sculptors on the practice and nature of sculpture, while also investigating the fundamental motives, beliefs, and aspirations that drive their practice. She also publishes a yearly zine with the Korean Female Sculptors’ Cartel, which she founded, on various aspects of the art scene and surviving as a sculptor. Her writing has appeared in major Korean art magazines such as Art in Culture and Monthly Art, and she has hosted talks with Seoul Museum of Art, Louise the Women, and Dongguk University. She is currently enrolled in the MFA program at Hunter College and will be joining the Summer 2024 cohort at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
